(KTVI – myFOXstl.com) —
An artists’ town where the Mississippi River is expected to crest at record levels Friday was hanging on with prayers from strangers and volunteers from as far away as sympathetic New Orleans.

The historic town of 500 people, midway between St. Louis and Hannibal, was in the same situation as other northeast Missouri communities that were trudging on, giving up, or suspending efforts Tuesday as they tried to meet the challenge of near-record flooding expected later in the week.

The picturesque, red-brick town’s antique mall and restaurants were surrounded by floodwaters as National Guard members, Missouri inmates and college students were sandbagging levees and buildings. A group from New Orleans, with painful memories of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation, were due to arrive soon.

With five city blocks already swamped, Mayor Jo Anne Smiley said Clarksville was doing all it could to prepare for Friday’s projected 38-foot crest.

“We fix one thing and it breaks,” she said. “Sewers are plugged up. We have leaks in walls, and people who need things. We’re boating food to people.

“I cry a lot, but I get a lot of e-mail prayers. That helps.”

In the downtown, where buildings house shops of artisans and craft people, Guard members and dozens of volunteers worked on a massive sandbag wall, at places 12 feet wide and 8 feet tall, as the Mississippi River began to lap at its edges.

The Guard members, many of whom have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, were glad to be helping in Missouri.

A couple in their 20s, Amanda Elliott and Victor Wright, have been working with volunteers since Friday to save his aunt’s home, where they’re staying. They used a boat to ferry sandbags through a yard filled with water.

“Yesterday morning, I just couldn’t lift another sandbag,” said the home’s owner, Roberta Hilton of Laurie. “I own the house, but at one point, I thought, ‘Is it worth it?”‘

South of Clarksville in Lincoln County the situation was deteriorating rapidly. Around noon, floodwaters began overtopping levees east of Foley, Old Monroe and northeast of Elsberry, along Highway 79. Sandbagging efforts were suspended at Foley, and the rapid water flow into low-lying areas was rising to 1993 levels. People were urged to evacuate.

To the north in Canton, emergency management director Jeff McReynolds said flood preparations would end Tuesday in anticipation of Wednesday’s predicted 27.5 foot crest. The river was at 26.2 feet in Canton on Tuesday.

Canton’s levee is designed for 24.5 feet of water, but it has a 3-foot extension. Volunteers have added 2 feet on top of that.

“We feel pretty good,” McReynolds said. “We’ve had 1,800 volunteers since the weekend. But it’s D-Day today. We have to be done today. We’re at 99 percent.”

McReynolds said his main fear is that 10 days of prolonged high water will place too much pressure on the levee.

“Am I nervous? Hell yes,” he said.

Levees at Canton and Hannibal, to the south, were the only ones from Burlington, Iowa, to St. Louis that held in what’s known as the Great Flood of 1993. Authorities in both towns believe their levees will hold during this flood too. Hannibal is so confident that it suspended sandbagging of its levee and flood wall on Tuesday.

“We’re in pretty good shape,” Hannibal Deputy Police Chief Lt. James Hark said. “The river has dropped a tad because of levee breaks north of us. We’re expecting a crest of 31.5 feet on the 19th or 20th. We’re at 27.74 now.”

Downtown businesses, including sites of the city’s most famous son, Mark Twain, were dry. “People are walking and driving,” Hark said. “It’s business as usual.”

Water covered some blocks that were transformed from residential to green space after the ‘93 flood.

In La Grange, just south of Canton, 15 percent of the town of 1,000, which does not have a levee, had evacuated. Most of the town sits on a bluff, but homes and businesses are in low-lying places.

“The town will come back,” City Administrator Mark Campbell said. “But how it comes back may have to be rethought. Homes in the flood plain may have to move out and (placed) in a park.”

The tiny town of Alexandria, population 166, just south of the Iowa border abandoned sandbagging efforts on its 27-foot levee and evacuated Monday.

North of Alexandria, most of the 100 residents of St. Francisville on the Des Moines River had evacuated. It has no levee.

The Humane Society of Missouri opened a temporary shelter for pets Tuesday in Bowling Green at the Pike County Fairgrounds. People also could drop off pets at the Hannibal Humane Society or the Canton Veterinary Clinic for transfer to Bowling Green.

Lt. Governor Peter Kinder said that by late Tuesday, he will have deployed nearly 500 National Guard members to flood-stricken communities. The Missouri Department of Corrections has dispatched 186 offenders to help fortify sandbags in Clarksville, Canton, Louisiana and Marion County.

Flood Waters Continue To Rise; Evacuations Requested In Winfield

The flood watch is now all along the Mississippi.

River neighbors are watching the water rise and hoping they can stay dry

But the water is everywhere.

Many low lying areas already seeing the rising rivers spill onto their property

It’s not exactly like the great flood of 1993, but for those most affected by the flooding it will come close.

From the upper Midwest down into Missouri and Illinois, the damage could reach into the billions and in some spots the crest isn’t even expected until later this week.

We have a team of reports on the flood watch, from Clarksville, Winfield, Grafton, and downtown St. Louis.

FOX KTVI seems to have the most people on scene. Its kind of eerie to know a wall of water is coming that will crest the levees. There are three of them within 20 miles of here in the other direction from Winfield. We are sitting in between the Mississipi and the Missouri Rivers; in 2003 most of the roads across the Rivers and Ferries were closed. This time its supposed to worse, but not as bad as ‘93..

Most voters favor the resumption of offshore drilling in the United States and expect it to lower prices at the pump, even as John McCain has announced his support for states that want to explore for oil and gas off their coasts.

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey—conducted before McCain announced his intentions on the issue–finds that 67% of voters believe that drilling should be allowed off the coasts of California, Florida and other states. Only 18% disagree and 15% are undecided. Conservative and moderate voters strongly support this approach, while liberals are more evenly divided (46% of liberals favor drilling, 37% oppose).

Sixty-four percent (64%) of voters believe it is at least somewhat likely that gas prices will go down if offshore oil drilling is allowed, although 27% don’t believe it. Seventy-eight percent (78%) of conservatives say offshore drilling is at least somewhat likely to drive prices down. That view is shared by 57% of moderates and 50% of liberal voters.

Nearly all voters are worried about rising gas and energy prices, with 79% very concerned and 16% somewhat concerned.

McCain is expected to formally call today (Tuesday) for the lifting of the federal moratorium on states being allowed to explore off their coasts for oil and gas deposits. While acknowledging it is only a short-term response, he has described it as a good first step toward reducing U.S. energy dependence on overseas sources.

The Outer Continental Shelf moratorium, passed in 1981, bans exploration for offshore natural gas and oil deposits. Barack Obama, McCain’s opponent for the White House, voted against an effort to lift the ban last year in the Senate. He argued that it was only a short-term solution. National Democratic Party leaders and most environmental organizations for years have strongly opposed efforts to explore for oil off the coast of the U.S.

According to the new survey, 85% of Republicans are in favor of offshore drilling as opposed to 57% of Democrats and 60% of unaffiliated voters. Those who call themselves conservatives favor such drilling 84% to 46% of liberals and 59% of self-designated moderates.

African-American voters are less supportive of such drilling than whites – 58% to 71%.

Women are more skeptical than men about the impact such drilling will have on gas prices: Nearly one out of three male voters (32%) say prices are very likely to go down, a view shared by only 23% of women.

Four out of five Republicans (79%) think prices are likely to fall thanks to offshore drilling, a view shared by only 55% of Democrats. Sixty percent (60%) of unaffiliated voters expect it to happen.

Voters also believe 61% to 22% that oil companies should be required to reinvest at least a portion of their profits into alternative energy research. On this question, liberal and moderate voters are strongly supportive of the proposal while conservatives are more evenly divided (47% of conservatives in favor, 35% opposed)

Data released yesterday showed that Americans believe developing new energy sources is the best long-term solution to the nation’s energy problem. Forty-seven percent (47%) said private companies were more likely to solve the nation’s energy problem than government research programs. But, at the same time, only 52% said companies should be allowed to keep the profits from the discovery of any alternative fuel sources.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Three Ohio men were convicted Friday of plotting to recruit and train terrorists to kill American soldiers in Iraq, a case put together with help from a former soldier who posed as a radical bent on violence.

Mohammad Amawi, 28, Marwan El-Hindi, 45, and Wassim Mazloum, 27, face maximum sentences of life in prison. Prosecutors said the men were learning to shoot guns and make explosives while raising money to fund their plans to wage a holy war against U.S. troops.

The federal jury in Toledo returned its verdict after three days of deliberations. U.S. District Judge James G. Carr did not set a sentencing date, said acting U.S. attorney Bill Edwards.

“Today’s verdicts should send a strong message to individuals who would use this country as a platform to plot attacks against U.S. military personnel in Iraq and elsewhere,” said Patrick Rowan, acting assistant attorney general for national security, in a written statement. “This case also underscores the need for continued vigilance in identifying and dismantling extremist plots that develop in America’s heartland.”

Mazloum’s attorney, Mo Abdrabboh, said he was preparing an appeal.

“It’s been a long, long trial,” Abdrabboh said. “We’re disappointed, obviously. … We respect that the jury has spoken, but (Mazloum) has maintained his innocence from the beginning of this.”

Messages seeking comment from the other defense attorneys were not immediately returned. At trial they claimed that the three defendants, who all lived in the Toledo area, were manipulated by the government’s star witness, Darren Griffin.

The undercover FBI informant and former Army Special Forces soldier recorded the men for about two years beginning in 2004 while they talked about training in explosives, guns, and sniper tactics. They often met in their homes and at a tiny storefront mosque where they prayed together.

Defense attorneys noted that Griffin was involved in all conversations the prosecution presented to the jury, and that there was no evidence of telephone conversations or e-mails dealing with the alleged plot among only the defendants.

Griffin won the trust of the men by posing as a former soldier who grew disenchanted with U.S. foreign policy who was now intent on violence against America. Prosecutors said even Griffin’s family had been under the impression that he had become a radical.

Griffin said most people at the mosque shunned him and that no one raised any threats until El-Hindi began talking about kidnapping Israeli soldiers. Amawi, Griffin said, asked him to help him train two recruits from Chicago for holy war.

According to one secret recording made by Griffin, Amawi said he was troubled by the loss of life in New York in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, but he quickly added: “Killing Americans in Iraq is OK.”

Griffin testified that he twice traveled to Jordan with Amawi and also taught Amawi and Mazloum how to shoot guns.

El-Hindi told Griffin, according to recordings heard in court, that he knew two cousins who were eager to receive “jihad training.” Griffin asked El-Hindi if he was recruiting for jihad. “Oh no, I just want to take these two,” El-Hindi answered, adding that he wanted to take care of them for their families.

The two Chicago-area cousins – Khaleel Ahmed of Chicago and Zubair A. Ahmed of suburban North Chicago – have pleaded not guilty to conspiring to kill American soldiers and face trial next year.

Amawi, El-Hindi and Mazloum were convicted of conspiring to kill or maim people outside the United States, including military personnel. Amawi and El-Hindi were convicted of distributing information regarding explosives to terrorists.

Defense attorneys said Griffin lied and manipulated the defendants by putting words in their mouths so that he could stay on the government payroll.

Attorneys for the men also questioned how the three men could have been involved in a conspiracy when they never practiced shooting guns together or watched training videos together.

Griffin testified that the three gathered in the same place just once during the two years he investigated them. He also said that he never saw e-mails from the men that talked about plotting to kill soldiers.

Amawi and El-Hindi are U.S. citizens, and Mazloum came to the U.S. legally from Lebanon. El-Hindi was born in Jordan, and Amawi was born in the U.S. but also has Jordanian citizenship.

They had blended easily into the city’s thriving Muslim community.

Mazloum was a college student who helped his brother run a used-car lot. Amawi once worked at a bakery. And El-Hindi was a married father of seven.

All had moved to the Toledo area only in recent years. Still, the arrests stunned the city’s Arab-American community, which has been rooted in the city for generations and produced actor Jamie Farr and entertainer Danny Thomas.

Associated Press writers Thomas J. Sheeran and M.R. Kropko in Cleveland and John Seewer in Toledo contributed to this report.

By TIM WALBERG | Posted Friday, June 13, 2008 4:30 PM PT

From Investors Business Daily: Tim Walberg is a Republican Congressman from Michigan.

The Department of Commerce recently announced that the U.S. trade deficit reached $60.9 billion this past April. America’s trade deficit increased by $600 million from April 2007 to April 2008, even though U.S. exports increased by $25 billion.

Why is our country facing a rising trade deficit even though American-made exports grew 19.2% over the last year (April 2007 to April 2008)?

The answer is found at gas stations across the country and in America’s $34.5 billion petroleum deficit, which is roughly half of our monthly trade deficit.

America’s dependence on foreign energy forces us to import about 12 million barrels of oil a day, sending billions of dollars to many countries that do not share our interests.

A barrel of oil has gone from $70 to $140 over the last year, dramatically increasing our trade deficit and shattering the family budgets of millions of Americans.

National Priority

Our country has vast and large supplies of energy, but unfortunately tapping into American energy sources has become controversial and mired in politics.

And while political games are played in Washington, D.C., Americans keep paying more at the pump.

Just as with the Manhattan Project or the race to the moon, breaking our dependence on foreign oil should be a national priority. Congress needs to allow an increase in America’s investment in our overall production of energy.

Last week, I introduced a discharge petition to force a vote on a bill to increase U.S. energy production and invest in alternative sources of energy.

The appropriately named No More Excuses Energy Act, H.R. 3089, would increase the supply of energy produced in America.

Benefits For The Economy

This bill would immediately open up ANWR in Alaska for environmentally sensitive oil exploration.

According to recent estimates, today America would receive 1 million barrels of oil per day from ANWR if President Clinton had not blocked exploration in 1996.

Outer Continental Shelf exploration, new refineries, wind, natural gas and new nuclear power plants are also covered in this legislation.

This bill would return much of our energy production back to the United States and create good paying American jobs, instead of sending hundreds of billions of dollars overseas to prop up countries like Venezuela that are opposed to American ideals.

Despite fuel costs at levels previously only seen in Europe, leadership in this Congress refuses to increase American energy production.

Instead, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and leading House Democrats would rather increase taxes on domestic energy production and increase our reliance on OPEC.

Recently there has been talk in the House of sending lawyers to sue countries such as Venezuela and Saudi Arabia for lower gas prices. Even the best trial lawyers cannot litigate America to lower gas prices.

Since Speaker Pelosi refuses to bring this bill to the House floor, a discharge petition is the only way to force a vote on this legislation.

House rules state that a discharge petition must have 218 signatures (a simple majority) in order to bring a bill to the floor for a vote, and I am working hard to bring both Democrats and Republicans together in support of this bill.

In the coming weeks, House Republicans will show the American people we want to increase domestic energy production. If the leadership in Congress holds us back, we will continue fighting for increased American production.

Cutting Back

Right now, many families in my south-central Michigan district are giving up nights eating out at restaurants or family vacations in order to cover the rising cost of gasoline.

Working families are paying twice as much to commute and pick up their kids from school and sports. If no action is taken, families will soon be giving up much more than they are now.

While many in Congress may gloss over the current energy crisis in America, the majority of Americans cannot.

The American people believe in expanding our American energy supply and developing alternatives to break our dependence on foreign oil. It is time Congress agreed.

Walberg is the Republican representative in Congress for Michigan’s 7th District.

Investors Business Daily

McCain has a golden opportunity to win my vote back. Make no mistake, he needs to earn my vote. But if he makes this a campaign priority, he will not only have my vote, he will probably win..

In response to a WSJonline story, excerpted below, we here at Artorius, are astounded that TWO, count’em TWO, liberal elitist Democrat Senators have been caught up in what we at Artorius are calling the “Great Democrat ‘Do as I say, not as I do’ Scandal”. First we had Chucky Schumer-Liberal Democrat Elitist-wanting to tax me in order to punish Oil companies, while he is driven around on the taxpayer dime. (See preceding story) Further, he just made 100,000 on a book he didnt write, but offered to pay no windfall tax on it. Nor will he. Silly readers, ethics are for Republicans!

Chuck Schumer-driving around on your dime

Now, Senator “Kennedy Waitress Sandwich” Dodd, has been caught getting preferential treatment from the very company his Senate Banking Committee was investigating! The cojones on these elitists! Dont bother trying to call his office, the press secratary is not answering calls. Its Friday after all, and they probably hope the story will die over the weekend. That will not be the case, Im tired of liberal elitists telling me to do one thing, while they do the opposite.

Senator Dodd-not paying points on a preferential loan. A loan the little people cant get..

Below is the excerpt of the Journal story:

Sen. Christopher Dodd, a top figure in Democrats’ response to the housing crisis, defended through a spokesman two mortgages he reportedly received under a special Countrywide Financial Corp. program that awarded preferential interest rates to people referred to as “friends” of the company’s chairman and chief executive, Angelo Mozilo.

“The Dodds received a competitive rate on their loans,” said Bryan DeAngelis, Sen. Dodd’s press secretary. “They did not seek or anticipate any special treatment, and they were not aware of any.” He declined further comment.

The news could cause headaches for the Connecticut senator, who is trying to negotiate housing legislation designed to deal with the foreclosure crisis. The final bill could include expanding a government program to insure up to $300 billion in refinanced home loans.

Publicly, Mr. Dodd has been critical of some of the mortgages in which Countrywide specialized, such as loans known as “payment-option ARMs,” adjustable-rate mortgages that give borrowers multiple payment options each month. In December 2007, he co-signed a letter to Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke that called these mortgages at Countrywide “abusive” because “these loans were not made on the basis of a borrower’s ability to pay.”

The “Friends of Angelo” program was first disclosed by The Wall Street Journal on Saturday and focused on former Fannie Mae Chief Executive James Johnson. Mr. Johnson resigned from Sen. Barack Obama’s vice-presidential-search task force because of loans he received from the mortgage lender under the little-known program.

Condé Nast Portfolio magazine reported Sen. Dodd’s participation in the program, among a handful of other Washington luminaries, on its Web site late Thursday. A spokesman for Countrywide, of Calabasas, Calif., didn’t return a message seeking comment…

We are shaking our heads here at Artorius. Not so much because of the Chutzpah displayed by Dodd and Schumer, but that nothing will be done about it. Had a Republican did or said what these two elitists did…

Will Chuck Schumer impose a windfall tax on his book? Or is that just for people Schumer hates?

WASHINGTON – Newly released documents show New York Sen. Charles Schumer made almost $100,000 in royalties last year from his book, “Positively American.”

The senator’s financial disclosure forms made public Friday show he received $94,000 from Rodale Publishing for the book, a tome intended to guide Democrats to greater electoral success by connecting with middle-class voters.

Schumer spokesman Josh Vlasto says that after expenses and taxes, Schumer actually made about $50,000 from the book, which went to pay for his daughter’s college tuition.

Schumer is paid a Senate salary of $165,200. His wife, Iris Weinshall, a former New York City transportation commissioner, reported making slightly more than $200,000 working for the city and City University last year.

And Chuck, who doesnt pay for his own gas, wants you to pay more at the pump because he hates oil companies. Schumer’s only claim to fame is beating up on Oil execs for the camera. Yet, Chucky makes 100k from a Ghost written book (it has to be ghost written, by virtue of its title)and is still driven around on the taxpayer dime.

This blog is sick and tired of turning on the news and seeing liberal elitists attempt to speak for America. The staff here at Artorius believes that Chuck Schumer is the ultimate elitist and will therefore be working dilligently to exposing Schumer for the “do as I say, not as do” democrat he is..

AP

“I am a believer in knowing what you are doing when applying for a job…”

YouTube exposes liberals again!!! Watch for the Howard Deans to try and ban YouTube by calling it “hate speech”. Never mind they are the boob’s own words. If you confuse a liberal with the facts of life, they lash out in disorientation, because the facts of life dont include the words, Hope or Change ..

Pay heed, Mr. Schumer-you cant stop ALL of the private videos out there…

Stolen shamelessly from Patriotroom.com

-Yet this Putz wants the taxpayers to pay more for gas to punish Oil Companies for being profitable…

“When in the Course of Human Events…”

When it is recognized that a Political Leader is so out of touch with reality like Senator Schumer, it behooves one to attempt to throw off the yoke totalitarianism. Make no mistake, Liberal Elitism, is just another form of totalitarianism . Chauffeured everywhere he goes, he doesn’t pay for his gas, you, the taxpayer do. But Chucky wants you to pay more. How much sense does that make? At a time where unemployment has just hit 5.5%, Chucky, whose job is secure, wants you to pick up the slack.

Liberal elitism has long undermined America, but it has never been more noticeable than here in the internet age. With the advent of Youtube, Flip, video, camera phones and other digital media, elitist’s Anti-Americanism comes to the forefront. Yet, folks like Schumer keep getting elected, much to our consternation. How does this keep happening? We at Atorius wish we knew. Do more than two people watch Olbermann’s hate speech filled show? I doubt it, but compare the two’s (Schumer’s and Keith’s) statements and sentiments, and you can see that they are reading from the same page. Granted Chucky’s speech may be a little more polished, but the message is the same-”Do as I say, not as I do.”

The Elitist is used to never having to say he’s sorry, but I intend to secure some flip video of the oily Senator “Doing” and not “Saying”. Will it mean anything? Or am I just preaching to the choir? It remains to be seen, but I have seen a brief part of the video, and I want the whole thing very badly. However, the person who is possession of the video, is desperately afraid of losing *** job. (The video was shot at DCA airport, where the Senator thought his taxpayer ticket trumped that of a paying passenger). Its a shame-Schumer would rather see someone fired for doing their job, than to face up to what he really is-a politician who is so out of touch with America, that he believes his mandate from the people of NYC makes him arbiter of things here in Missouri.

I say again, Senator, you don’t speak for me, nor do you speak for honest and reasonable people. We are praying we can obtain the video, but will refuse it if the person’s job is threatened, which knowing Chuck “I’m a United States Senator!!” Schumer, is exactly what will happen. Liberal elitists cant stand being exposed before their peers..

So stay tuned-its time for liberal elitists like Schumer to go, and we at Artorius will be working diligently toward that end, by exposing Schumer’s elitism for all to see..
